Thyroglossal duct cyst

Thyroglossal duct cyst is a benign cyst arising from the remnants of the thyroid gland that has descended down to the lower neck. This can appear at any age, common in the age 2 to 20 years.

Main problem with these cysts are that they can get infected and cause abscess formation. There is also a small chance that is can under go malignant transformation in later years. Radiological evaluation with a CT scan or Ultrasound scanning is useful prior to surgery.

Treatment that is curative is known as the Sistrunk’s procedure, where the cyst, hyoid bone and tract is completely removed.
