Dermoid cysts

Dermoid cysts are benign growths that commonly appear on the scalp, neck, mouth, and around the eyes. Though usually harmless, they can grow, become infected, or cause discomfort, often requiring surgical removal.
Dermoid cysts
Dermoid cysts are benign tumours that can occur any where in the body, but commonly found in the head and neck region. Common sites are the neck, nose, scalp, parotid glad, mouth and tongue. They cause problems as they can get infected and swell therefore cause pain and obstruction of vital structures.
This is best treated with surgical excision. Prior to surgery imaging with Ultrasound or MRI scanning may be required.

FAQs
Dermoid cysts develop from trapped skin and tissue during fetal development. They contain hair, oil glands, and other skin structures.
Most dermoid cysts are benign and painless. However, they can become infected, grow in size, or press on nearby structures, requiring medical attention.
A doctor may diagnose a dermoid cyst through a physical examination and imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI to determine its size and location.
Surgical removal is the most effective treatment. The procedure is typically minor and prevents future complications such as infection or obstruction.
If completely removed, dermoid cysts usually do not return. However, incomplete excision may lead to recurrence.
If a dermoid cyst is small, painless, and not causing any issues, it may not require immediate removal. However, growing or symptomatic cysts are best treated surgically.
